LOOKING BACK.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," April 10, 1905). Water Rating.—At the meeting of the Longbeach Road Board on Saturday, Mr J. C. N. Grigg, speaking of the alternate prospects re water, rating, to be submitted to a referendum by the County Council, said he was not sure the ratepayers would select the chainage if all the methods of rating were fairly presented to them. The trouble was that the Council's action jn the matter had looked like an attempt to force a new system of rating on the ratepayers. He had asked the chairman of the Council at the time when the proposal was carried to rate on valuation, if it was the intention .of the Council to fate everybody without exception. The chairman answered, "That is our intention." It would be seen, therefore, that there was a very good reason for the various ratepayers' meetings which were held to protest against the proposal, and that the ratepayers were not "crying out before they were hurt." The Mayoralty.—ln reply to a numerously signed petition, the present Mayor (Mr Henry Davis) has consented to l>e again nominated for the Mayoralty for another year. Draughts and Chess Club.—A committee meeting of the Draughts and Chess Club was held at . the Club's rooms on Friday evening. Mr J. McKay occupied the chair. On the motion of Mr W. Smith, seconded by Mr W. Kerr, it was decided to hold the opening social on Friday, the 14th inst,, at the Commercial Hotel. Final arrangements in connection with the social were made.

Tinwald Literary and Debating Society.—There was a good attendance at the general meeting of the Tinwald Debating Society held in the Oddfellows' Hall on April 5. The officers lor the ensuing year were elected as follows:—President, the Rev. Mr Blakiston; vice-nresident. Mr C. Smithsecretary and treasurer, Mr W.
