The Secretary for India (Captain WedgAvood Benn) Avas questioned in the House of Commons regarding the effects of the campaign conducted by Mahatma Gandhi in India. The Minister replied: As the House is aivare, Mr Gandhi’s march has caused a certain amount of excitement in the Bombay Presidency, particularly in the districts .actually traversed, and a small proportion of the village headmen have resigned, temporarily at any rate. Elsewhere little general interest appears to have been aroused. The main project of Mr Gandhi’s campaign is to defy the GoA’ernment by breaking the salt laivs. This has only just been initiated, and it is too early to form any opinion as to the effects. Asked Avhether any steps had been' taken by the GoA’ernment of India to prevent mass civil disobedience, Captain Benn said the policy of his Majesty’s Government Avas stated by the Viceroy in his speech on January 25, and this avoulcT be pursued 1 , as tbe circumstances might demand, by the GoA’ernment of India.
