MUSICAL CLUB.
OPENING OF 1930 SEASON. AN ENJOYABLE GATHERING. The opening meeting of the Ashburton MusicrJ (Sub was held on Saturday evening. The president (Mr E. Buchanan) congratulated the club on the large attendance of members, stating that the increased membership augured well for the season.
Prior to an attractive programme arranged by Miss Galbraith, an instructive and interesting paper ' entitled “Music Round the World” was read by her, which dealt with the wireless transformation of the world with regard to music, and later went on to show what an integral part music has played in the lives of the peoi>lo for many centuries. She outlined the early musical instruments, and traced their improvement to those that were employed to-day. . The following programme was presented: —Recitation, “The Day is Done” (Longfellow), Miss E. Thompson ; pianoforte duet, “From Foreign Parts” (Moskowski), Mrs A. C. Williams; solo, “The Girl with the Flaxen Hair” (Debussy), Miss L. Lewis song, (a) “Vainka’s Song” (Von Stutzman), lb) “The Wood Pigeon” (Liza Lehmann), Mrs C. Parsons; instrumental trio (Reissiger), Miss Galbraith. Mrs McDonald and Mr W. Wood; musical monologue, Miss E. Thompson; song, “The Enchanted Forest” (Montague Phillips), Mrs D. Lawson; pianoforte solo, “Four Dances from Merrie England” (Ed. German), Mrs A. C. Williams; song, “Prelude,'*’ “Down in the Forest” (Landon Ronald), Mrs A. T. Smith; pianoforte solo, “Nocturne” (Chopin), Miss M. Jennings; song, “The Nightingale” (K. Jerulf), Mrs N. Thomas; pianoforte solo, “Raindrop Prelude” (Chopin), Miss A. Madden; song, “A Brown Bird Singing” (Hadyn Wood), Mrs R. Stephenson; instrumental trio, “Apple Blossoms,” Mrs McDonald, Miss Galbraith and Mr Wood. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the hostesses, Mesdames Birnie, Buchanan and Ruddock.
