BOARD OF MANAGERS. EXEMPTIONS FROM MILITARY DRILL. The Technical School Board of Managers met yesterday afternoon when there were present Messrs R. Galbraith (chairman), T. Hayes, J. Watson, F. J. E Smallbone, W. T. Lill, G. W. Andrews and W. G. Hillier. The principal (Mr R. J. Thompson) was in attendance.

The general account showed a credit of £622 0s 2d. The Education Department wrote notifying the Board that all apprentices must take all the following subjects for the preliminary technological examination unless they had passed in ail these subjects for their senior free place examination:—Trade drawing, free and instrumental drawing, mathematics, general experimental science and metal-work. The principal stated that 13 students would be taking the preliminary technological course. . . ~ The matter was left in the principal s hands. The AsEßurton Loan and Investment Society wrote advising the Board's fixed defxisit amounting £726 5s became due on March 5. It was decided that it be renewed for one year on the usual terms. . . The Technical Education Association wrote enclosing a copy or a letter received from the Minister of Defence with regard to the military training of evening students. The Association wished to know how the enclosed regulations would affect Ashburton. The letter from the Minister stated that full consideration had been givon representations made by the. Association in this matter, and although it was considered' that exemption from drill of Technical College night students should not be granted, it had been decided to extend the following concessions which would be effective as from January 1, 1030. (a) Territorials who were technical college students and wei'e indentured apprentices —The 12 drills a year which constituted a part of their' obligatory training, would be carried out in the evening during College vacations as might oe arranged; (b) Cadets who were technical college students and were indentured apprentices—The 30 drills a year which constituted the greater part ol their obligatory training, would be carried out in the evenings during college vacancies as might be arranged. The chairman said this had not been in force in. Ashburton. It was unfortunate that the drill holidays were taken at the same time as the school l-olidays. They would have to meet the situation as best they could. The matter was left in the hands ot the principal. Two months leave of absence was granted Miss M. Richards (general teacher) and it was decided that arrangements for a temporary teacher be left to the principal. . The principal was given, permission to get further particulars regarding the insurance and superannuation ol clerks and caretakers employed by Technical Schools. , Correspondence dealing with the proposed establishment of a District Hign School at Rakaia was received from the Education Board.
