Mrs C- F. G. Masterman, widow oi an ex-member of the British Cabinet j while lecturing on how to encourage modern poets, related that a young man walked into a London newspaper office on a wet evening, with water squelching from his boots, the soles of which were parting from the uppers. He asked to be given some book reviewing, and jvas allowed to take" a book. Some hours later he returned with some c<jpy, which the editor accepted. Lingering a minute, the youth asked if ho could have immediate payment. Asked his name, he replied: "John Masefield."
