RUGBY FOOTBALL

MATCHES ON SATURDAY. The Ashburton) Rugby Union’s comX>etitions were continued on Saturday afternoon. There was a very small attendance at the Showgrounds, where two senior and several lower grade matches were held. The match between Old Boys and Allenton was half an hour late in starting and Allenton, who fielded a weak team, were immediately called on to defend, a Black passing rush looking dangerous. Terris and Argyle led the Blues back to half-way and a long kick saw Old Boys in trouble. McCormick sprinted downfield and caught Jordan in possession on the line, and Old Boys forced. Allenton continued to force the play, McCormick and Lysaght being prominent. In a loose rush near the line, Cartwright, following up well, beat liis man for the ball and scored an unconverted try. Allenton 3, Old Boys 0. Davis was in the picture with a determined run which immediately took play to the Blue ■ twenty-five. From' a scrum the Old Boys backs set off and Robilliard transferred to Nieoll who scored. Jordan’s kick did not go over. Allenton 3, Old Boys 3. Old Boys remained in the* Blue territory and play was confined to a series of scrums and an exchange of kicks. In a passing rush, Clark, running hard, scored at the corner, with two men hanging on to him and Robilliard in attendance. Welch failed to convert. Old Boys 6, Allenton 3. Three long kicks gave Allenton an advantage but bad passing spoiled a promising movement. Play hovered on the Blacks’ twenty-five line until Friedlander kicked out at half-way. From a scrum Todd cut through but gave a forward pass to Clark. Half-time was called with the score unaltered.

Old Boys attacked from the outset and a fast forward rush saw Old Boys force. Allenton, however, were unable to get outside of their own twentyfive, the Black forwards spoiling any movements that looked promising. Nieoll and Todd made things interesting but the latter’s pass went astray. Play drifted to past half-way, but Pawson led his forwards back and a very uninteresting period ensued. Old Boys showed periodical flashes of combination but like Allenton, devoted their play to individual movements. The Blue backs, however, by fast following up, caused much trouble among their opponents. The forwards were evenly matched, taken all round, but Old Boys, were faster, and headed by Pawson, were continually harassing the Blues. Davis was prominent in a fast dash down the line hut was soundly taken by McCormick. At this stage White (Allenton full-back) retired through injuries. Friedlander was prominent in a dash for the line hut was held up ,on the line. A free kick I was awarded Old Boys and Jordan increased their lead.' Old Boys 9, Allenton 3. Allenton then took a hand at attacking and kept Old Boys on defence, until Jordan opened up play with a good kick which went out at half-way. Back surged the Blues andFox dived oyer near the corner. Pennall’s kick struck the post. Old Boys 9, Allenton 6. An exchange of kicks followed and Todd, from half-way, stent the ball out at the corner, and Allenton immediately forced. Time was called with the scores Old Boys 9, Allenton 6. Mr E. McDougall was referee.

Hampstead 12, Hinds 11. Hinds set play in motion, and their heavy forwards gave Hampstead a great amount of trouble. The. sound Green defence prevented the Hinds movements from being finished off. A free lack to Hinds was accepted by F. Hood. Hinds 3, Hampstead 0. The Greens pressed home an attack but were gradually forced 'back to halfway. Their backs again transferred to Alexander, who toojc the offensive, and Tainui, running strongly, scored in the corner. Hinds 3, Hampstead 3. Give and take play followed and the Hampstead vanguard surged up-field. The movement was capped by a try by Crowe. Again the kick was unsuccessful. Hampstead 6, Hinds 3. B. Brown broke up a nice Green back movement by intercepting and racing to Gourle.y at full-back, who collared him. A series of scrums gave little advantage to either side. Whiting was then prominent and transferred to Stephen, who raced away to score in the corner. Gourley failed to convert. Hampstead 9, Hinds 3. Immediately afterwards McCormick, securing from the ruck, dived over and converted his own try. Hampstead 9, Hinds 8. This was followed by a free kick to Hinds, which was accepted by Brown. Hinds 11, Hampstead 9. Hinds made desperate attempts to increase their lead, hut the defence was sound. Hampstead regained the lead when Day secured and dived over. The kick was unsuccessful. Hampstead 12, Hinds 11. The Greens attacked, and Day, Tainui, and Stephen took play to tliei Hinds line, but the defence could not be penetrated. Time was called with the scores: Hampstead 12, Hinds 11. Mr A. H. Guiney was referee.

Rakaia 8, Methven 3. Although Methven fielded only a scratch team in their match against Rakaia, played at Methven, play was fairly even during the first half when no scores were registered. Shortly after play resumed, A. Burrows (Methven) _ got possession and dived for an opening to score. The try was unconverted. The game wasl then even until the last ten minutes when Rakaia set tip a strong attack, culminating in Waterhouse scoring and converting his own. try. Miller added another try

shortly after but this was unconverted. The match did not commence until 3.45 p.m., and finished in the dark. Mi- C. Topp was referee.
