FANCY DRESS DANCE

ASHBURTON EAST SCHOOL.

CHILDREN'S ENJOYABLE EVENING.

I One of the most successful functions ever held in the Ashburton East School community was carried out at the Hampstead Memorial Hall, The support of the parents, everywhere cordial and enthusiastic, left no doubt in the minds of those responsible for the organisation and conduct of the carnival, that such opportunities, afforded the pupils for social experience and education in the right atmosphere, were welcomed and approved by family heads. Weather permitted the hopes of ! all to be realised, the result being that I the accommodation was taxed to the f utmost. In contrast with the simple, i refined taste displayed in hall decoration by greenery and delicate streamers was tiio brilliance of colour in fancy idress where ingenuit}', sometimes striking originality, and often delicacy and nice discrimination were displayed. Members of the staff, - Misses J. Spillane, D. Hodges, and T. Cowan, who were responsible for the organisation, wish to thank Mrs H. J. Chapman and the members of the orchestra under her leadership, Mesd'ames McKay and Keeley in whose capable hands were the supper arrangements, the parents who sent along baskets, and the other staff members who co-oner-atcd in making the function everywhere enjoyable and so successful that the Library and Infant Apparatus Fund of the School benefited to the extent of £lO.

The judging, which-was in the hands of the Mayoress (Mrs R. Galbraith), and Mes'dames A. T. Smith and D. C. Brown, resulted as follows:—Best fancy dress—Girls: Vyonne Addis (Eastern Dancing Girl). Boys: Gavin Louden (Chinese Mandarin). Most original dress—Girls: Mavi3 Andrews (Ice Cream). Boys: "Harry Lauder." Cheapest, dress—Roy Vincent (Box of Tricks). Youngest child in fancy dress—Girls: Barbara Hunt (Powder Puff). Boys: lan Rollinson (Midshipman). General fancy dress—Kathleen Keeley (80-peep), Betty Beaoh (Cow Boy). The Mayoress, on presenting the prizes generously donated by Mrs Chapman, congratulated the children on their good fortune, their uniform happiness, and their fine behaviour, and, in conclusion, calling for cheers for the industrious and painstaking mothers, she was greeted by a unanimous response.
