SHOW WRITING COMPETITION.
Sir, —The committee responsible for the schedule of the Winter Show has allowed itself to he influenced by something in the nature of humbug when setting the senior writing test. For this competition the writing must be done under the supervision of a teacher, and the copy set is a list of the names on the War Memorial in Baring Squire West. This list, I understand, contains the names of 435 of the fallen. The writing of this large number of names will need several sheets of foolscap and occupy some hours of valuable time, which neither pupils nor teachers can afford. What judge will want to be bothered with such a mass of material when he can arrive at the merit of the work in half a sheet of foolscap of writing? The question of honouring the memory of the dead is not involved. DOMINIE.
