PERSONAL.

Dr. J. Russell Wells will represent the Australasian College of Surgeons at the Pan-Pacific Surgical Conference to be held at Honolulu on August 14. Dr. Wells, who will be accompanied by Mrs Wells, expects to' leave Ashburton on July 26. Dr. J. A. Jenkins, Dunedin, Dr. W. P. P. Gordon, Stratford, and Dr. J. Hardie Neil, Auckland, will represent the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association at the conference.

One of New_ Zealand's representatives with Sir Douglas Mawson's forthcoming Antarctic Expedition will be Mr R. G. Simmers, of the Meteorological Office, who has been instructed to hold himself in readiness to proceed almost at once to England to join the Discovery, which is sailing in August. Mr Simmers, who will be on the meteorological staff of the expedition, is 24 years of age, and is a son of Mr G. L. Simmers, a former headmaster of the Ashburton High School.

At the conclusion of choir practice at St. Stephen's Church last evening the Rev. A. J. Petri? congratulated Aubrey Osman on gaining Scholarship, and on behalf of the Choir Boys' Club presented him with a set of military hair brushes and wished him every success. Mr J. G- Thompson (organist and choirmaster) and Mr S. M. Cassidy also congratulated Master Osman. In replying on behalf of his son, Mr W. C. J. Osman thanked the boys for the gift and the speakers for the kind remarks, and said that much of his son's success was attributable to Mr Thompson's careful instruction.
