Russell, which was removed from Princes Street early this morning, wasrecovered about two; hours later at One« hunga, under exciting , circumstances.When the Auckland police were notified of the loss of the car they immediately communicated with the Onehun'ga police, and Constable F. Johnsen, who was on. night- duty, kept a sharp look-out, with the result that he saw the car proceeding down Queen Street, Onehunga, toward the Mangere bridge. He called out to the driver to stop, but the latter, instead of doing so, accelerated and passed the constable. , Some time afterwards,;. Constable Johnsen saw the same' car returning from the direction of Mangere, and again hailed the driver, who refused to stop. The constable had a motor-oar ready, and in this he chased the other one up the street. When he overtook it the driver pulled' up* and, jumping out, tried to run away, but Constable Johnsen proved more speedy than the.fugitive and collared: him. A struggle ensued, in which the constable was strongly resisted, but: he succeeded in landing his man in the lock-up. This morning, Nicholas Frederick Lindhdlm appeared before Mr J. E. Green, J.P., charged with conversion ot a motor-car valued at £SOO, and also with resisting the police. He was remanded for a week, bail being refused.
