TWO PEOPLE DROWNED
FATALITY NEAR WELLINGTON. MAN ATTEMPTS TO SAVE WOMAN. iPcr Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 25. While bathing at Titahi Bay this afternoon, a young man, Mr J. Pope, was drowned while .attempting xmsuccessfully to rescue a young lady, Miss Downey, whose body. has not yet been recovered.
The victims of the accident got out of their depth, and with a Miss Skews, were carried toward the open water. Four men went to their rescue, and one got hold of the girl, but she siij>ped from his grasp. Miss Skews narrowly missed sharing the fate of her friends.
The rescuers managed to drag Mr Pope to the shore, but all efforts to restore him failed, though a number of doctors were on the scene, and a nurse gave assistance.
Mr Templeton, step-father of Miss Downey, noticed that something was going on on the beach, and, helped with an. improvised line. For some time he was in ignorance of who were endangered till Mr Pope's body was carried past him. Mr Ward, one of the rescuers, almost came to grief, and was much distressed.
At sunset an object was seen far out and a launch went off, but found only Miss Downey’s bathing cap.
