Macartney and Hansen were found <railty of charges involving espionage on behalf of Russia, and were sentenced to 10 years’ penal serviture. The jury deliberated for a quarter ot an hour and found both guilty on all counts. , ' , The police stated that McCartney had had a good education, and had obtained a commission during the war. He was captured, but escaped. He began writing articles tfor Communist newspapers. In 1926 he was sentenced for attempted shop-breaking. Nothing was known against Hansen The Chief Justice (Lord' Hewart) said that both were clearly convicted ot terrible offences. The term spy had been misplaced, because spies took risks for their own country. Hansen was undoubtedly the paymaster m a widespread organisation. „, ~ McCartney asked if he could give the authorities information regarding /Monkland. , , ~ Lord Hewart replied that he would doubtless have the usual facilities.
dOURT RIGIDLY GUARDED. FOR REASONS OF STATE;. LONDON, January 17. Remarkable arrangements were made in connection with the trial of Hansen and McCartney, on charges involving espionage. . ... The doors of the Court were rigidly guarded. Even solicitors engaged on the case were not allowed to stay while evidence was taken in camera. Such precautions are only taken on rare occasions, and may only be sanctioned by the Judge when necessitated for reasons of State.
