Mr and Mrs R. J. Thompson and family returned to-day from a three weeks’ camping tour at Hanmer and towns on the East Coast. The Education Board at Christchurch yesterday approved the transfer of Miss J. Kennedy from Wakanui to Rokeby, and Mr E. Keyes from Orton to Wakanui. Sir James Parr goes to Paris on Saturday to take Lady Parr to spend a few weeks’ convalescence in the Riviera. Sir James returns to London next week (says a cable message). The Canterbury Education Board yesterday appointed Miss D. Nicholls infant mistress at the Rakaia School. The following resignations were accepted :—Miss G. Cowan, Eiffelton ; Mr H. Patrick, Mayfield; Miss R. Clark, Rakaia; Miss G. A. Boyd', Seafield. It is now almost- certain that the Prime Minister will return to New Zealand by the Makura, which is to leave San Francisco on January 26, and is due at Wellington on February 14 (says a Wellington telegram). The appointment of four Government nominees on the. Council of the University of New Zealand, now in proems of reconstruction in terms of last session’s amending Act, is announced by the Minister of Education. The nominees, whose names follow, will hold office for a term of three years: — Mr Thomas Reid Fleming, M.A., LL.B.; Hon. Josiah Alfred Hanan, M.L.C.; Mr Thomas Hugh Macky, andMrs William Barr Montgomery, C.8.E.: Mr W. E. Kinnerney, for many years .a member of the firm of Perry, Perry and Kinnerney, solicitors, Timaru, died this morning, aged 72. Mr Kinnerney;. was bom at Wexford (Ireland)-in 1854,' and came to New Zealand in 1862. Hewas educated at a private school at New Plymouth, and came to Timaru in 1891. He joined the firm Of Perry and Perry the same year. He Was a lawyer of outstanding parts and a recognised authority on municipal; 'harbour board, ■ and banking law (says a Press Association message). ■ ; In the Junior National Scholarship examinations the following Ashburton pupils reached the standard of qualification, the marks gained -being given in parentheses:—K. R. Austin, Alienton (476):. R; A. Carson, -High' School' (573); R. T. Clarke, High School (552). J. EJ Bentley, of the - Springbum School, qualified for a scholarship under conditions of clause 4." of the ‘ regulations, with 512 marks.
