PLUNKET SHIELD

CANTERBURY’S UPHiLL FIGHT. SPLENDID INNINGS BY PAGE. (Per Press Association.)' L. ' 8 ■ '' _ ; : : ; CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Yesterday was a most interesting day for the cricket enthusiasts at Lancaster Park, where the game for the Plunket Shield between Auckland and Canterbury was resumed. The first day’s play had placed the visitors in a strong position, as, in response to Canterbury's poor total of 128, they had scored three for 149. The wicket rolled out well yesterday, though an inspection showed that it would be of much greater assistance to the bowlers as it was drying rapidly. A surprise was i in store for the Aucklanders, as Cunr ningham was*in his best form,, and, sided by a couple of run outs, Canterbury got rid of their opponents for a total considerably under what it promised to be after the first day’s play. Canterbury were 92 runs behind on the fii'st innings. Their Second effort was shaping just as badly as their first one, and when half the team were out for 60 runs it looked as though the game might easily finish last evening. Thanks to a very fine innings by Page, the situation was improved, and then a most-needed and valuable partnership of 55 runs by Boon and Read at the end of the day has placed Canterbury in a position where they have at least a fighting -chance.
