WITHHOLDING SUPPLIES.

I BUTTER FOR BRITAIN. j REPLY TO ALLEGATIONS. ! (Pe- Press Association—Copyright.) LONDON, Fob. 12. At a meeting of the Home and Colonial Stores, Mr Emeryl repeated his protest that Australia and New Zealand were holding up butter supplies. . i The commercial authorities attached to the Australian and New Zealand High Commissioners' Departments state that Mr Emery's complaints are not new, or altogether true, because neither the Australian nor New Zealand Dairy Export Control Boards are unreasonable in withholding butter or cheese. It is their podicy to regulate shipments inconsequence of the abnormal conditions following the shipping strike and so partly prevent the glutting of the markets and the slumping ot prices. They point out that Mr Emery, while "charging the Australians and New Zealanders with holding up supplies in the hope of better prices, virtually admits that he is carrying on with minimum supplies and is accumulating exceptionally large cash /balances in the hope of the market becoming more favourable. Both Australia and New Zealand recognise _ the gravity of the '-growing r competition especially from the Argentine, where Mr O'Gallagban, the ex-Australian expert, achieved remarkably high qualities in butter, although on a comparatively small scale. The question of holding up supplies was recently referred to the newlyformed New Zealand Dairy Board in London, which decided it was not necessary to take action.
