LOOKING BACK

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," Dec. 30, 1900.) Sports at Tinwald. —The committee of these sports intimate in this issue that they have devoted the sum of £5 for toys, lollies, etc., which will be distributed free to the children. Given fine weather, this gathering should prove a very enjoyable outing. A Trip to the Country.—Travelling up to the Spreadeagle a clay or two ago, I was sorry to see the old sheepyards going to pieces, but as a set-off against this I noticed a good many improvements and some good grass and crops close to tho main road. 'I should like to have gone further and seen the Alford Station, but that must be for another visit. I see Mr John O'Shea has erected a nice cottage on his land, on which the grass is looking well. The feed was also iirst-rate on Messrs Fechney's, Good's, and Stokes' land. The crops on Mr Rippingale's land were very good. Mr Rountroe's sheen and crop 9 are looking first-class. I saw a large lot of Mr Herring's ewes and lambs crossing the creek at Mr Rountree's, and the driver had' some bother owing to the bridge approaches not being properly made. Coming down from the Forks I noticed the country looked grand. Indeed, tho wav the plantations have come on of late years has created quite a lovely landscape, where once only tussocks could be seen. At Mrs Good's farm there was some nice wheat. The next homestead, Mr Church's, has been recently painted, and he has a fine garden, with the fruit trees in grand condition. His wheat and oats look exceedingly well. Mr Archie McAllister has some good crops, also a fair lot of mares and foals in paddock, which do credit to the breeder. Mr Lawrie's crops are very good, but T was sorry to see the pond made by Mr Stone when he occupied the property was nearly empty, and the trees looked when I saw them much in need of water.—Agricultural Editor.
