NEW YEAR'S EVE
LARGE CROWDS IN TOWN. FIXTURES FOB TO-MORROW.
In contrast to the conditions experienced on Christmas Eve, Ashburton is doing its New Year shopping Tinder overcast skies, with a distant threat that the shower of rain that fell yesterday afternoon may yet he repeated i before the Old Year dies. The streets, however, are crowded this afternoon, and shopkeepers are able to report good business, although many people are out of town for the holidays. It is expected that there j will be large crowds in the streets tonight, and the police are taking steps to see that traffic on the footpaths is kept moving as much as possible. Those who wish to hold a parliament in miniature will have to get off the footpaths to- do it. As at Christmas time, fireworks of all descriptions will be barred from the public places, and steps arc being taken to check any possible larrikinism in the business and residential quarters. There are several holiday attractions for to-morrow. Two cricket matches will be played on the Domain, one betwen Ashburton seniors and New Zealand Nomads, and the other between Ashburton juniors and a team from Christchurch City and Suburban clubs. The matches will be continued on Saturday. At Peel Forest, where there is at present a large number of holiday-makers, a Queen Carnival and sports programme will be held, ending with a dance in the evening. At Hakatere, also, sports will be held by the campers at the river mouth, and no doubt a large contingent will go down from Ashburton for the day. There will be sweets and fruit and drink stalls, and an enjoyable day's outing should result. If the weather is wet, the sports will be held on Saturday. A concert will be given in the evening.
