GREAT MELBOURNE FIRE.
WORST IN FLINDERS LANE. LOSS BETWEEN £45,000 AND £50,000. (Per Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The most disastrous fire in the history of Flinders Lane, the heart of Melbourne's warehouse centre, destroyed a building occupied by several firms of warehousemen and importers. As the lane is s very narrow and the area congested with large buildings containing valuable inflammable stocks, the firemen had a difficult task to get the outbreak under control. The damage is estimated at between £45.000 and £50.000.
The premises wore recently bought ' N. Spencer, draper, of Bourke
Street. Large crowds quickly gathered, and hampered the efforts of the brigade till police reinforcements arrived.
