MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

ASHBURTON, THIS DAY. (Before Mr E. D. MOSLEY, S.M.) Civil Business. Judgment for plaintiffs by default was given in the following cases: — H. P. Arnst (Mr Buchanan) v. H. Blackwell, claim of £4 Os 6d, costs £1 8s 0d; Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd. (Mr V. W. Russell) v. G. H. Bennisou, claim £l7 10s 3d, costs £2 18s; Dr. H. Hunter (Mr Kennedy) v. A. McD. Brown, claim £1 2s 6d, costs Bs. In the judgment summons case, M. Coutts (Mr Buchanan) v. A. Blackwell, claim £27 ss, an order was made against the judgment debtor, who did not appear, for payment of the amount forthwith, in default 28 days' imprisonment. Trouble Over a Crossing. An echo of the collision which occurred between a motor-car owned and driven by Mr W. J. Sparrow, of Ashburton, and a special express train at the Havelock Street crossing about midnight on April 10, was heard when Sparrow was charged with having attempted to cross the railway line when a train was within half a mile of it. Mr A. T. Donnelly, who appeared for Department, said the engine-driver whistled twice. The train was pulled up. No damage was done to the train. Defendant said he heard a whistle a long way off. A local doc-tor's ear lights were shining in his eyes. He was unable to see the line clearly. Very little damage was done to his car. A fine was not imposed, but defendant was ordered to pay ccsts £2 2s.

Affected Sheep. The Stock Inspector (Mr C. Branigan) proceeded against H. L. Barker for having exposed affected sheep for sale at a public stock yards at Methven. Mr W. H. Wocds appeared for defendant and entered a plea of guilty. The Inspector said he found six sheep out of 100 affected with lice. Mr Woods said defendant did not know the lice were on the sheep, as he had bought them only seme weeks earlier. A fine of 20s and costs was imposed.
