INFANTILE PARALYSIS.
ELGIN CASE POSITIVE. OTHER PATIENTS PROGRESSING. The Medical Superintendent of the Ashburton County Hospital, Dr. Billcliff, reported this afternoon that the case of infantile paralysis admitted last week from Elgin, had been diagnosed as positive. This is the only case notified in the County since April 1. There are now four cases undergoing, treatment. All are making satisfactory progress. TOLL OF THE EPIDEMIC. TOTAL OF 166 DEATHS. Four notifications of infantile paralysis were received by the Health Department for the 24' hours ending 9 a.m. on Saturday. There were one each at Riccarton, St. Kilda, Hamilton, and Leamington. The Riccarton case was a girl six years of age. The epidemic which affected New Zealand for five months, cost 166 lives. There were in all 1257 eases, and an unexpectedly large number recovered. In the 191* epidemic there were 123 deaths. Wellington and district suffered more severely than any other in the recent epidemic.
