EAST AND WEST.

Sir, —It is gratifying to have the assurance that the “Guardian” “never has fostered, and never will foster, distinctions” between West and East, or Hampstead, as more familiarly known; but it is difficult to persuade the people to think so, as they are d!pt to judge by actions. However, personally, I am prepared to accept your statement, simply contenting myself with suggesting that the attitude of the paper unfortunately seemed to lend its influence in that direction. This appearance of partiality came as a. severe disappointment to many whose faith had been strong in the “ Guardian’s” f airmindedness.

Hampstead surely is entitled to fair representation by men more conversant with the particular needs of that part, and I am satisfied the ability of the men from that quarter is quite equal to the demands of office. _ There certainly seems something in Mr Horrill’s' statement that Hampstead has not received the consideration from the council that it should have received. The same may be said of other portions of the town where the share of rates collected has not been evenly expended. This is not in the nature of a complaint, only the friendly criticism as invited by Cr. Bowden. Hampstead residents cannot help comparing the service they now receive with that which the Town Board gave them. Then it had just as efficient sanitary arrangements, just as good roads and footpaths, quite as good lighting at much less expenditure, and no overdraft?,' proving the business efficiency of the Town Board. I trust the Borough Council will take up Mr Horrill’s challenge and prove, if it can do so, that Hampstead has been fairly dealt with since the amalgamation. I for one shall be glad if it is able to do this.

Having a larger stake in the town than in Hampstead, I am free from any hi as. My desire is to see justice done hy our City Fathers to a neglected lJart ' CLEM. G. ANDREWS.
