THEFT BY YOUNG MAN
THREE YEARS’ TEATMENT
IN BORSTAL INSTITUTION
A young man with a. list of convictions for petty thefts was sentenced at the Ashburton Police Court this morning to a three years’ term at the Borstal Institute, Invercargill. Alfred Sydney Buckley, aged 19, appeared on remand charged with the theft of tobacco and tissue papers valued at 2s lid, the property of Joseph Fussell, Ashburton. Accused pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Jackson said accused l had taken the articles from the first of a row of coats in Messrs AA 7 . H. Collins and Co.’s factory. He had then made off. Accused’s parents who lived at Ssouthbridge, did not take much interest in his doings. As far as the police knew, accused was doing no work. Tlie Probation Officer’s report upon various offences committed by accused in Christchurch, was read. The Magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley) said accused appeared intent upon committing petty offences. The Courts had given him every chance in the past. It was no use sentencing him to a nominal term in the Borstal Institute. He would be gj.ven the longest term possible.
