The joint expedition of the British Museum and the University of Pennsylvania is excavating at Abraham’s reputed birthplace, and reports that it has unearthed the Temple of Ningal, wife of the Moon God, at the base of Ziggurat, which was excavated last season. It also found the convent of King Nabonidus, built for his daughter, including dwelling houses, offices, and school-rooms. A hoard of clay tablets discovered give ,a remarkable insight into the affairs of the temple 2200 years before Christ. The tablets include rent and tithes paid by farmers, receipts for every pound of butter, pint of oil and head of sheep placed in the temple storehouses, also monthly and yearly balance-sheets, and pay sheets showing how much raw wool, gram, and oil was given to workmen as pay, which varied according to the age and utility of the worked*.
