BARNES SENTENCED. THE USB OF THE KNIFE. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Joseph Barnes, found guilty of manslaughter in connection with the death of Walter John Whall on May 1, was sentenced to 10 years’ gaol, with hard labour. , ' A Counsel referred to prisoner s go war record. He had been rejected in Australia, but had gone to England and served at the front, being wounded and gassed. There was no premeditation of the crime. The man was ol good character. , , • Mr Justice Macgregor said the Prisoner had enticed away the wire of the deceased, and deceased iiatura y seated it and more than race thrashed the prisoner. The jury had taken the merciful view that prisoner had acted under, provocation. None the less, be had killed a fellow being. The use of the knife must be put an end to, a id it was his plain duty to inflict a substantial penalty. If the prisoner had been an older man be may have had to •inflict imprisonment for hie.
