MELBOURNE, June 6. Hides are dull excepting stouts. Values have declined a farthing a pound. LONDON WHEAT REPORT.

LONDON, June 5. Wheat steadiness in America and the Argentine has produced increased cargo inquiries for Britain, hut Continental demand is inactive. Parcels arc in fair demand, and occasionally 3d a quarter dearer. Spot trade is quiet, and prices occasionally are slightly easier. Australian flour, ex store, 35s per quarter. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. Business still remains dull in the local grain and produce market. Most lines are not inquired for, and, even if they were, the supplies available are short. This month another a bushel is added to the prices of milling wheat. This, however, is not of much importance to Canterbury farmer's, as practically all their wheat has been marketed. The shipment of Australian wheat which arrived in Lyttelton by the s.s. Kauri has been distributed. The quality of the wheat is reported to be very fair. At the present time there is a fairly good demand! for seed wheat, though the recent wet weather has interfered with sowino- operations. A -local merchant stated that, as far as he could learn, a fair amount of wheat had already been sown for next season, but it was hard to say what the ultimate acreage sown would be. The market for potatoes is quiet, hut values are firm. This is due to the fact that the majority of farmer's are not prepared to sell at. present prices, and are therefore holding on to their supplies. Discussing the potato market, a merchant said, that as it was a fortnight since potatoes fell in price it was rather surprising that farmers had) shown no anxiety to sell. This seemed to indicate that not many farmers had lareg supplies of potatoes on hand. As a result of the short supplies Worn the country prices had a firming tendency, and he would not be surprised if the market improved shortly. Reports from Auckland indicate that the market there is well supplied with potatoes, both from Australia and Canterbury: There is little demand for potatoes from Auckland at present. Garton oats are still very firm, and nominally they are worth up to 5s abushel on trucks at country stations. Supplies of Gartons are very difficult to procure, and this combined with the speculation that has gone on this season has forced prices up. It is expected that it will be next month before Canadian* oats arrive in * Christchurch in any quantity. Although the demand for Canterbury chaff is only for local consumption and from the West Coast supplies are so short that prices have firmed u-t> by about 10s a ton. The North Island is still drawing its supplies of chaff from Australia and' Marlborough. . , , , On account of an improved , demand - from the linseed mill In Auckland the price has firmed up locally. The market for partridge peas is dead. There arestill a good many holders of peas, . but at the present time there are no indications o-f the London market, improving. All classes of seeds are quiet., but prices remain unchanged. It is a bit too early for any considerable demand for the spring trade, and the fact that both ryegrass and cocksfoot are fairly dear does not tend to encourage trade in them.

PROPERTY SALE. Three sets of sales of property were offered yesterday by Mr Henry Stephenson. One was sold, and two passed in. Under instructions from the mortgagee, two* roods, with factory and workshop, in Moore Street, and 3 acres 2 roods 26 perches, with dwelling, on Belt Bondi, Allenton, were offered jointly, and realised £1550. The two properties passed in were: — On account of Mr W. Palmer, 40 acres, with cottage, Main South Hoad, just past racecourse, passed .at £120; and on account of Mr J. Pithie, $- acre, with cottage, Saunders’ Road, Allenton, passed at £IOSO.
