ROKEBY.

The first social function in connection with the Rokeby district was held iin the school, and took the form of a euchre party and dance. There was a large attendance, and all present spent an enjoyable evening. The ladies’ prize in the card tournament was won by Mrs P. Brick, and the booby prize by Miss B. Donaldson. The men’s prize, which was a thermos flask given by J. Pye and Co., was won by Douglas Donaldson, Mr Keith Campbell, of Hawarden, winning the booby prize. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs Donaldson, Miss Hooper, and Mr R. Storey. It was decided to hold another party on June 19. The funds are to be handed to the school committee, and will be used in improvements for the children. Recently a. large area outside the school has been concreted, and funds are also in hand for an up-to-date shelter-shed. It is also intended to have electric light installed in the school buildings. i, After waiting for many years, the residents are gratified to see the commencement of the shingling of the ■school road, and it is hoped that the undertaking will be proceeded with expeditiously. Mr Blackman is still relieving at the school, pending the arrival of Mr Cotton. the newly-appointed master. The weather recently has been very favourable from a grazier’s point of view, but has delayed the work of the teams. However, the general opinion is that a very-small area will be sown in wheat. ;

COLDSTREAM-LGWCLIFFE. A meeting of the Coldstream Road Board was held last Monday. Present: Messrs J. Brown, J. Campbell, W. McKeage and H. Wills. An apology for absence was received from Mr C. Gilliand. Mr W. McKeage was elected chairman for the ensuing year. The certified balance-sheet was received from the Auditor-General, Wellington. A letter was received from Mr John Butler, Hinds, stating that he is willing to act as stock ranger and also sexton. It was resolved that Mr Butler be appointed to fill both positions.

A letter was received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands that he had been advised from Wellington that the vesting of the three acres of pound reserve in the Coldstream Road Board was now completed. Mr W. Thompson wrote resigning his position as stock ranger. On the motion of Mr McKeage, seconded by Mr Brown, a general rate of Jd in the £1 has been made, in terms of public notice given. The clerk’s report stated that the widening of Wren’s Road bridge, and reducing grade-, had been completed. The alterations to pound reserve- were well in hand ,and the old building will be taken down shortly. Accounts amounting to £67 17s lOd were passed for payment.
