CONFERENCE AT WEMBLEY.

The first of a series of important conferences being held in connection with the Empire Exhibition was opened at the Town-Planning Institute, which has a striking exhibit in the Palace of Art.

MnWheatley (Minister of Health) attended and declared that -the time was ripe for legislative town-planning powers in order to prevent the muddled development which they had inherited. He was not surprised to learn that 80 per cent, of Britain's population lived in urban areas, but he was amazed to find that Australia's percentage was 00 and Canada's 50. The Minister announced that the Government would give every encouragement to local authorities attempting town-planning.
