FREEZING INDUSTRY!

EMPLOYERS FILE DISPUTE. A dispute filed by the employers in the freezing works industry in Canterbury was the subject of " consideration at a sitting of the Conciliation Council at Christchurch yesterday. Mr W. H. Hagger, Conciliation Gcmmissioner, presided, and the assessors were as follow:—For the employers, Messrs S'. Dickson, P. Garrick, H. S, E. Turner and F. V. Sanderson (agent),; for the workers, Messrs F. Hanson,, T. Morrow, H. C. Revell and F. CEllis (agent). The following parties were cited:— New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd., Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Ltd., North Canterbury Sheepfarmors’ Co-operative Freezing Company, Ltd.,’ Oppenheimer Casing Company, Wellington, Canada Casing Company, Auckland, and the New Zealand Freezing Works and Related Trades Association of Work el's and the Canterbury Freezing Works a-nd Related Trades Employees’ Union. The employers ask for about eighteen alterations in the present irtvard. The most important are:— That, instead of all unshorn sheep after November 30 being paid for at double rates, all unshorn sheep after December 31 shall be paid for at rate and a-half. Calves unskinned, half rates. Pigs, if scraped by machines, rate to be reduced by 4d per head. All reference to watchmen in thei present award to he deleted. The following paragraphs to be added to the clause dealing .with' slaughtermen’s work : —“lf required.,, men to leave a. tuft of wool on shanks of Down lambs, and, in the case of beef slaughtermen, brisket and aitcb bone to be sawn.” That the clause providing for one learner to three slaughtermen be deleted. In place of one learner for' eachbeef slaughterhouse, it is asked that there should be one for each tackle. In the afternoon the representatives! of both sides held consultations with the Commissioner, and the points oh which no agreement has been reached! will he cleared up this morning, the Council meeting at 9.30.
