POPULATION FIGURES.
The vital statistics for the month of June, which appeal' m the current “Gazette,” show that Auckland city still holds pride of place with .a lation of 167,760. Then -follows Christchurch with a population of 113,400; while Wellington Is -Aloseup with 112,000. Dunedin as far in'the rear with 75,020. Of the provincial towns, Wanganui is easily first, with .24,450., Invercargill coming next with 20,180. Then follow Napier 17,870, Palmerston ‘North 17,810, Timaru 16,450, Hamilton 15,350, Gisborne 15,120, New Plymouth 13,930, Hastings 13,730, 'Nelson 11,240. The total births registered 'for • the urban areas amounted to 942, as against 1103 in May—a decrease of 161. The deaths in June were 481, an increase of 16 as compared with the previous month. Of the total 'deaths males contributed 250, females 231. Sixty-six of the deaths were o‘f children under five years of age, 'being 13.72 per cent, of the whole nuniher. Forty-four of these were -under one year of age.
