Mr W. G. Spite, manager of the National Mortgage and. Agency Company at Waimate, has been . appointed s. sub-manager at the Christchurch; branch of the company.

A London cablegram states that’ Miss Rosina Buckman, the famous international, dislocated a knee andruptured its .tendons while playing tennis.

Three members of the Cabinet—the Hon. C. J. Parr, the Hon. G. J. Anderson, and the Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes—* have been suffering from influenza - colds. Sir Heaton, however, has not - been off duty, and Mr Anderson was - able to be in his office yesterday after--noon, as was also Mr Parr.

Mrs Wain, of Waimate, who has been l staying at Ashburton, returned home yesterday. Her daughter, Miss Wain, of the Ashburton High School staff., who sustained a renewed attack of influenza, goes home to-day to recuperate.

The Ashburton Borough Council has appointed Mr J. R. Richardson, a young Wanganui man, to the position of sanitary and general inspector, and he will commence duties early in August. . Mr Richardson has excellent testimonials, and lias apparently a sound knowledge of the main work that will be required of him. He is a registered plumber, holding the Royal Sanitary Institute’s certificate, and has obtained a first-class pass in the final examination in the principles of leadwork and sanitation conducted by the 1 City and Guilds of London Institute. He has had experience in inspection work.

Mr W. G. Hillier,' of Ashburton, who was present at the turning of the first sod on the West Coast side of the land Railway, has received an invitation and will be present at the ceremony of opening the Otira tunnel. Mr Hillier. has an interesting picture of the gathering at the ceremony 36 years ago, when the late Hon. E. Richardson turned the first sod at Stillwater, afterwards named Richardson and later reverted to Stillwater Junction. . This site is about a mile from the Brunner Coal, Company, whose employ Mr Hillier was in at the time, as a member of the engineering, staff. A few of the staff from the mine assisted in the preparations. The Mayor of Ashburton, Mr R. Galbraith, might also be present.

Mrs A. Dunkley, a resident of about 40 years of Addington, passed away at her residence, Selwyn Street, Addington, last night. Mrs Dunkley was mother of Mr A. 0. Dunkley, of Ashburton. By her death Addington will have cause for a great deal of regret, for Mrs Dunkley was noted for her acts of kindness voluntarily performed in the. spirit of the pioneer women of Canterbury. Although Mrs Dunkley had been suffering for the last twelve months, her end came rather suddenly, though peacefully. She leaves a family of foul! sons and seven daughters. Her eldest son, Frank, after serving at the front for about four years, was drowned while on duty as a Government surveyor in the North Island three years ago. There are 22 grandchildren.

In welcoming Mr It. A. Collins to the Borough Council table last night, Mr Collins having been elected to the council to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr W. Page, the Mayor (Air It. Galbraith) said the town and the council was to be congratulated on securing Mr Collins’ services, for he was a man of marked ability. The Mayor said he had had the pleasure of working on other bodies with Mr Collins, whose thoroughness in dealing with the business was outstanding. He would make an excellent councillor. Mr Collins was a son of an ex-councillor and Mayor, now deceased, and the Mayor felt Mr Collins would follow in his father’s footsteps and eventually attain to the Mayoral chair. Replying,Mr Collins thanked the Mayor for his remarks, and said he hoped it would not be long before he obtained a knowledge of the council’s work so that he might he some assistance to the council in its deliberations. Air Collins thentook the customary oath.
