INFLUENZA.

NO FURTHER NOTIFICATIONS. There were no further notifications of pneumonic influenza, cases in the Ashburton County over the week-end, and the position appears to be very satisfactory. „ , , , When the Borough School opened this morning it was found that there were 143 pupils and two teachers absent, so the headmaster conferred with the School Committee, and it was decided to close the school for the remainder of the week. The High School re-opened this morning, and it was found that there were 50 more pupils present than when the school closed on Wednesday, last. It was decided to keep open, the crisis, as far as this school is concerned, seemin'- to have passed. One teacher is still on the sick list. There were 56 missing out of a roll number of 188. At Ashburton East there were 10a pupils absent, and two teachers were 'laid up. The position this afternoon would decide whether the school closed ° r The absentee list at Allonton School was slightly bigger to-day than it was during last week, 50 pupils being away. The position there, however, did not warrant the closing up of the institution.

Temperature at the Schools.

Enquiries made this morning showed that the temperatures at the schools of Ashburton varied considerably. Allenton School registered 58 degrees at 9 a.m. to-day, and the High School from 52 to 54 degrees. The temperature at the Borough School was not taken, hut it was thought to he considerably over 40 degrees, and the same applied Ashburton East.

The Mayfield School is still closed until further notice on account of the prevalence of measles and influenza.

’FLU IN OTAGO. The influenza position is more favourable. The notifications in the past 48 hours were seven. There are 32 members of the mirsing staff of the hospital off duty. Four deaths have occurred since Saturday oyer the whole health district. Several schools reopened this -morning, but eight fresh country ones closed. Seven of the Public Library staff or the total of 10 are off duty.
