MT. SOMERS MISHAP
department takes action.
GUARD FINED AND SHIFTED-*-The Railways Department, has-noti-fied the guard of the Mount Somers line that lie is fined £2- and transferredto Christchurch “as a; punishment for having failed to carry, out the regulation to test the Westingliouse brake. _ This is a sequel to the derailment of the Mount Somers train on June 15,. when the lives of 60 passengers, includ--ing about 30 school children, were imperilled. As is now well known, the settlers who use the line and are. familiar with its- condition. refuse* totattribute this and previous derailments to anything hut the line’s state of disrepair, and have requested an open investigation. It is understood the guard has &■ right to appeal, but it is considered doubtful if he will do so, as the transfer is regarded as being practically.*; equivalent to* promotion.
