SWIMMING CARNIVAL.

LARGE ENTRIES RECEIVED.

Record entries have been received for Saturday's big swimming carnival, promoted by the Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club. About 200 swimmers will take part. A large number who were at the New Zealand championships at Timaru will be breaking the journey here. Hawke's Bay, Wanganui, Wellington, Christchurch, and Timaru will be represented. A splendidly varied programme of events, well endowed with trophies, has been drawn up. Hill, the half-mile and mile champion at the New Zealand gathering, and Batchelor, the 220 yards winner, will be swimming. An. extra club race of 50 yards has been added to the pro* !'gramme. Ample provision has been "made for school children and :ladies. On the present entries therer vaH: be three heats to the ladies' race..: i Miss Simes, Canterbury 100 yards champion, will be present.—ln the inter-club race of 50 yards there will probably. be 10 heats.' Tjh.efeature of-the afternoon should be the 200 yards inter-club relay race, for. which 17 teams, widely representative, .have entered. The 200 yards inter-club'(open) should also bo a well-contested event. The visitors have entered freely for all events, including the diving, of which there will be a good deal. A cork scramble for ." boys 'should provide plenty of amusement. The carnival will commence *fc 3 o'clock, but itis not intended to hold any of the inter-club races until after the arrival of the second express train from Christchurch. The Domain baths were emptied yesterday, and are now being refilled. The water should be considerably improved by Saturday.
