BOXING.

THE McQUARFME-McCLEARY CASE.

MEETING OF OTAGO ASSOCIATION.

DUNEDIN, January 30. The dispute occasioned by the action of the New Zealand Boxing Council in reversing the decision of the referee who awarded the heavyweight championship of the Dominion to Paul McQuarrie against Brian McCleary, was considered again by the Otago Boxing Association at a meeting to-night. Amongst tho correspondence on the subject was a letter from the Ne\r Zealand Council, stating that the Timaru Association had been informed that it was now in a position to promote a match for the heavy-weight

championship, it being the first applicant.

In reply to a question, Mr Gillies, the chairman, said the association could not be joined in the action for an injunction. He added that the matter had been fully ventilated, and that he had not come prepared to make any statement about it, as it was now sub-judice. In the interests of the whole of the boxers the matter should be carried to its legal conclusion.

It was resolved on the motion of Mr Kilmartin, seconded by Mr Saunders—“ That as the Otago Boxing Association contends that Paul McQuarrie is the rightful holder of the heavy-weight championship of New Zealand it agi’ees to give every assistance to McQuarrie in his action against the New Zealand Boxing Council relative to an injunction being instituted by him prohibiting a contest for the heavy-weight championship of New Zealand with Brian McCleai-y as the present holder of the title.”

It was decided to send copies of Mr Douglas’s opinion to the New Zealand Council and to the Timaru Association.

The secretai’y stated that Mr Douglas had already been thanked for his assistance. The chairman remarked that Mr Douglas’s opinion was highly satisfactoi-y coming from such a high authority.

An opinion was also received through a member of the committee from Mr Douglas, a gentleman who came out with the cricket team and who has had wide experience with the Federated Amateur Boxing Association of the world and with the National Sporting Club of England. Mr Douglas’s opinion was that the referee had full power to deal with the situation, and that his decision was correct and could not be interfered with. McQuarrie wrote asking the association to assist him in securing an injunction against the council. The chairman remarked that the association would, no doubt, give McQuarrie its moral support, but at present it w-as a matter between himself and the council. He. agreed with a member that the association would be able to assist McQuarrie by giving evidence on bis behalf.
