LAWN TENNIS.
ASHBURTON DEFEATS TIMARU. A team of tennis players from the Timaru Club visited the Ashburton Club on Saturday and played a match on the Domain courts. The local team proved too strong for the visitors, whom they defeated by 16 matches and 158 games to six matches and 126 games. Results are as under (Timaru players being mentioned first): Men’s Singles. —Pearse beat Pinfold, j 9-4; Scott beat Holford, 9-3; Mason lost to Grut, 5-9; ltevell lost to Bounin gton, 8-9; Robertson lost to Francis 6- Ulrich beat Jaine, 9-7. Ladies’ Singles.—Mrs Bannerman lost to Mrs Seldon, 3-7; Mrs Coxhead lost to Miss Stewaiff, 2-7; Mrs Minifie lost to Miss Percy, 3-7: Mrs Low beat Miss Digby, 7-4; Miss Lindsay lost to Miss Cowan, 3-7; Miss Knibley lost to Miss Bonnington, 6-7. Men’s Doubles. —Pearse and Scott beat Pinfold and Holford, 9-5; other matches unfinished. Ladies’- Doubles. —Mrs Bannerman and Mrs Coxhead lost to Mrs Seldon and Miss Stewart, 4-7; Mrs Minifie and Mrs Low heat Misses Percy and Cowan, 7- ; Misses Lindsay and Knibley lost to Misses Digby and Bonnington, 3-7. Combined Doubles.—Pearse and Mrs Bannerman lost to Pinfold and Miss Stewart, 6-9; Scott and Mrs Coxhead lost to Holford and Mrs Seldon, 8-9; Mason and Mrs Minifie lost to Grut and Miss Percy, 5-9; Revell and Mrs Low lost to Bonnington and Miss Digby, 3-9; Ulricli and Miss Knibley lost to Francis and Miss Cowan, 5-9; Robertson and Miss Lindsay lost to Jaine and Miss Bonnington, 6-9, .
