THE PACIFIC TREATY
AMERICAN’S OPPOSITION. AUSTRALIA AND ATTACK. (Per Press Association, Copyright.) (Received Marflh 4, 9.55 a.m.) WASHINGTON, March 3. Senator Hitchcock declared that the Four Power Treaty was conceived in secrecy and suggests that the alliance binds four powers for the purpose of monopolising “Pacific Islands.” “If Australia is threatened with an attack,” lie said, “we shall be bound to join other Powers for the purpose of agreeing upon its defence, although the attack might be provoked. Baron Uchida has just informed the Japanese Parliament that the Four Power Treaty is intended to extend the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. If the Japanese interpret the Treaty as an alliance they are likely to act under its provisions as an alliance. “I do not like the idea of guaranteeing Japanese aid to the British possessions of exGerman islands in the Pacific.”
