THE MINING DISPUTE.

- — : ♦ LIGHT ON THE DEADLOCK. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Octoßer 29. Regarding a telegram from Greymoutn stating that a deadlock had occurred m the mining dispute, Mr T. O. Bishopj technical adviser to the Mine Owners' Association, stated- today that at the Westport conference the following alternatives were offered by the mine owners' delegates: — (1) That Messrs Davidssn and Bishop shou% leave at once for Southland to make the best arrangements possible ; regarding the two idle mines, and I then arrange for a meeting of the Otago and Southland companies and miners' unions to make new agreements for those districts, ithe West Coast meeting to stand adjourned m tiie meantime. (2) That the present negotiations be allowed to proceed, and that immediately after their conclusion Messrs Daridson and Bishop should go to Southland and endeavour to procure a satisfactory settlement of the disputes there. The proposals were declined by the miners' delegates, who suggested that ■Messrs Davidson and Bishop should go to Southland and try to bring about a resumption, and, if successful, to return and. resume the West Coast conference. To this the mine owners' delegates declined to agree, on the ground that it was simply wasting time, as it made no provision for reaching finality. Mr Bishop cays it' is impossible to think otherwise tLan that the Miners' Federation officials attended the Westport meeting with the fixed intention to break off the negotiations before they were really commenced by refusing to take the Otago and Southland district agreements into consideration immediately, and refusing to negotiate regarding agreements m any other district until the Southland difficulty was overcome. They have m effect cancelled the arrangements for holding district conferences. • The owners' decision regarding future steps will prqbably be announced m a few days. GUARD AGAINST IT. If your baby is teething during the summer months you must guard against dysentery and bowel complaints. Keep a bottle of Chamberlain's Colic and Diarrhoea Remedy m the house and at the first_ unusual looseness of the bowels give it a dose.— Sold by all chemists and storekeepers.
