HANNAN BEATS WELLS.
-(Per Press Association.) BLENHEIM, October 29. The race for the sculling champion-' '. ship of Marlborough was rowed on the Wairau River to-day, under perfect conditions, between J. P. Hannan and * 'Jumbo" Wells. The tide was at full when the rowers started off. Hannan immediately took the lead and was four lengths ahead at the quartermile. Rowing with an easy swing he drew away until ten lengths separated the boats. Wells made a strenuous effort to reduce the gap, but without avail. Hannan passed the judge's boat a good ten lengths to the good, Wells being all out. Time — 23min.
