A SUGGESTED AMENDMENT.

THE POLITICAL SITUATION. (Received October 31, 10.35 a.m.) LONDON, October 29. : Lord Robert Cecil has given notice of an amendment to the "Diehards' " ; motion, declaring that while it deplor- . ed the Government's lack of policy m Ireland during the last three years, the ; House i&r of .the opinion that the. break- ' ing off of negotiations at the present stage is likely to increase the dangers • and difficulties of the situation. It is , possible the Speaker will not accept the amendment to ensure the motion being dealt with. ! The British political situation con- ; tinues most obscure. The Irish Conference, though m existence, is believed to. hang by a thread. Such secrecy is being maintained that even : the Sinn Feiners m Dublin are complaining that they are unable to speak, ' act or think owing to ignorance of : events m London. The Irish delega- , tion, regarding the situation as precarious, have forwarded a-n important ; statement to de Valera m Dublin, where a Sinn Fein secret convention ' terminated yesterday. Nobody fears that the "Diehards" will succeed m [ their censure motion, but it is asserted m some well-informed quarters that if , the motion were less sweeping it would ; win the support of the majority of the Conservative members of the House; ; who dislike Mr Lloyd George^and hate his policy.
