LOOKING BACK.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

(From the "Guardian," .Oct. 29, 1896.) A general meeting of shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand was held this afternoon, Mr Watson*, president, m the chair. The directors reported that during the year the business of the Colonial Bank had heen acquired and its branches taken over and established at various centres. The balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, 189 b, shows a net profit of £52,195, but which on an amended adjustment *>y the Colonial Auditor, and approved by the Colonial Treasurer, was reduced by £12 492, leaving a balance to credit of profit and loss of "£40,083 The Ashburton Prohibition League, m another column, advises electors riot to pledge themselves. Very good advice, too. At the Canterbury Education Board it was decided to call for tenders for a school at Hinds-Rangitata and to prepare plans for the one at Allenton. The average attendance at Rakaia South having fallen below 171, -a reduction of staff was necessary. 'Hie attendance at Lismore having fallen to nine, the committee were informed that the board could not_ afford to maintain the school on its present footing, but must reduce it to the position of an aided school. Day Star, the favourite for the New Zealand Cup, was absent from the training tracks at Ricearton yesterday, and it is reported that he is lame. Grasshoppers are pronounced a great delicacy m New Zealand when prepared according to the following recipe : —One - bushel of the insects is immersed for two hours m one halfgallon of pork brine. The insects are then boiled m the liquid for 20 minutes, then thoroughly rinsed m warm water and placed m an oven to become crisp. When cold the heads are removed, and they are ready to be eaten. The flavour is said to resemble that of shrimps. >
