"OVER THE TOP"
BRISBANE, Jun« 13. "Over the top? Haven't I been orer the top?" thundered a returned soldier at the height of an argument with a civilian on Victoria Bridge this afternoon. "And I'll go over again any day ? " ho declared. . "Bet yon two bob you're not game to go in over there;" said the other party, pointing to' the parapet of the bridge. . , "You're on," said the digger, and without a moment's hesitation he mounted the ironwork, and dived headlong into the stream, clothes and all. He struck the water with his arms extended, and disappeared from view. Rising to the surface he floundered about aimlessly for a time, and then coolly struck out for the shore. Assistance was soon forthcoming from a near-by fisherman, whose attention had been attracted by the party on the bridge, and the khaki-clad boy was rowed to the V.M.C.A. hut on the river bank. \ Except for a small cut on the head, the soldier waß apparently none the worse for his escapade. "I'm all right," he said. "Anyone got a cigarette?" ' . . The ambulance attended to the cuu on bis head, and afterwards took him to the General Hospital
