A cable message reports tho death of Sir William McGregor, former High Commissioner of the Western Pacific, •• at the ago.of 72.

The following appointments ol teachers in tho ' Ashburton* County were approved at the Canterbury Edu- ' cation Board meeting yesterday: — Chertsey, Miss C. M. Huffam; Hinds, Miss D A. Gudsell. The following resignations were accepted:—Ashburton, Miss H. Shearer; Wakanui, Mr C. J. Rosoveare.

The body of the late Lance-Corporal J Lee was brought from Christchurch • to Ashburton to-tlay for interment. The funeral was' attended by a number of returned soldiers, who acted a« pallbearers. The service at the graveside was conducted by Dean ' O'Donnell, after which Bugler D. Moore sounded , the "Last Post."

Tho following staff appointments for the Canterbury Military District are announced: — Major 'F. Hume, R.N.Z.A., to command Group W (Timaru); Captain A. N: Oakley. M.C„ to bo area officer, Timaru, and adjutant 2nd (South Canterbury) Regiment; Lieutenant C. Quartley to be area officer and adjutant, Bth Mounted Rifles, Ashburton, vice Lieutenant N. W. P. Blatlnvayt. Lieutenant S. Frickleton, V.C., is posted for duty in Group 21 (Qreymouth). His district has not yet been assigned him.
