MOUNTED RIFLES' BAND.
A meeting was held in the Victoria Hall on Tuesday evening for the purpose of forming a committee of citizens to act with the committee of the Bth S.CV Mounted Rifles Band, as an executive to manage a Novelty Fair, to raise the balance of the money required for the new instruments. The Mayor presided, and ■said that it was a thoroughly deserving object. The band had turned out on every possible occasion during the last four years, and it was up to the town to forward the project. He moved that the meeting agreed to a-ssist, and that the fair •be held at a date to be fixed by the executive.
In seconding the motion, Mr M. J. Burgess said the band had a reputation, and the town should be proud of it.

The following citizens committee was elected:—Messrs M. J. Burgess,. T. M. Clark, F. Crnm, O. Crum, E. Elliott. H. A. Humphreys, T. J. Hunter, L. Hopkins, F. Smith, A. S.. Todd, )?• Robilliarcl, and the Bandmaster, who was appointed convenor of the next meeting. The Mayor stated, that .tho Band had purchased a set of instruments for £794 16s, less £80 cash discount, and that on March 18 £178 10s deposit had been paid with tho order, ami that on receipt of in-stmmpnts £268 % hnd.to be- fomid. . The fin.nl payment of £268 3s was due six months after arrival of .instruments. Of this sum-the Band had collected £200. The Band lind a ianior ■division of 30 imvrnbors., and by Christmas thorn was nothing to prevent the 'full, strength of tho Band being 60 playera .
It was pointed out that the new instruments were to be the property of tho town, and that thev^ \yovM he vested in trustees for the citizens so that there would be no likelihood of their "being taken away if the Ho:idqtiai'fcers of the regiment were transferred from Ashburton to another centre. ;:
