COUNTY CENTRES.

NEWS AND NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

METHVEN

Patriotic Hockey

Wo have lately established the practice of having a game on v the, Domain each Saturday afternoon in aid of some patriotic fund. Laet Saturday week we had football, Married v. Single, the former being victorious. Single are not satisfied, and have issued a challenge for a return match; but not yet—we must first ret-assemble the; pieces and get them in. working order again. y '; In the meantime it was decided to devote Saturday last to hockey, the sides being tennis players v. bowlers, and the teams were as follow:—Tennis: Morgan, Doherty, Dart, Percy, Bennett, Cuming, Beameley, Lucas, Stone, Bayliss, and lrwin (captain). Bowlers: Robins, Smith, Maguire, Stewart, Beattie, Campbell, Roll, Pearee, Ben. Grover, and Cooper (captain). An exciting and attracti'S game was played before a good au> \ cnce, with tho usual collection yielding a nice little tribute to the Red Cross Society. The public are taking an interest in these Saturday outings, and each woek sees an increased attendance. The game was even throughout, and the tennis team had to play up to win by three goals to one. As many of the players were obvious amateurs at the game, there were.,many laughable incidents, and the referee I (Mr Clarke) was compelled to make free use of the whistle; this turned out to be rather an advantage than otherwise, the temporary cessation of play providing a rest for-those (not a few) who were crying " bellows to mend." For tennis, Lucas and Cuming were the particular "stars," and for bowlers, Cooper and Roll showed to most advantage, with Campbell and Robins the best of the others. The president of the Bowling Club flourished a fine stick (and was duly penalised for so doing), and when " Tiny " lay in the bowlers' goal, tennis know that a was out of the question. " Father " played a (waiting game, and ". The Colonel " iii front of him stemmed the torrent of attack as a " hofficer " ' should. " Pinus insignia" was somewhat green, but when seasoned a little will show to more ad- , vantage. The "Landmark" was anything but true to his name, and shifted his ground in a way that brought consternation to the opposing backs. " Scholasticus" bossed his team as one of his calling should, and led his boys to victory; while the bowlers' captain certainly had the " co-oper-ation" of his hefty men. Campbell was a team of draught horses in himself, and Grover was quite as fast as the Methven evening train on a race night with a nor'wester blowing. Mr Clarke made an efficient arid fair referee.

Next Saturday we will again play hockey, " Alphas " v. " Omegas " — the former those whose names commence A to I, and the latter J to Z. Irwin will organise the " Alphas," and Roll the "Omegas."
