FAITHFUL 17,000 OF RHEIMS

Having stood their ground for two years and a-half of almost continuous bombardment, the last 17,000 inhabitants have now left Rheims. .Before the German declaration of war -Rheinis was a prosperous city, with 117,000 inhabitants, and, though about 100,000 of the population left by degrees, the remainder refused to go. They organised an underground cellar life, with schools and municipal, social, and business activities.
