GREAT MERCHANT FLEET
TOKIO, May 9
Japan is rapidly becoming a firstclass shipping power. She added 140,----000 tons to her shipping in 1916, and a further 60,000 since the New Year. The\ merchant fleet now consists of 11,372 ships, of which ,2185 are steamers; w,ith;,-i total of. 2,333,000 tons.
There is feverish activity in the shipyards, and Japan is not even content with monopolising the commerce of the Pacific.
