COST OF LIVING.
CAUSE OF THE HIGH PRICES OF MEAT. LONDON, May 30. In tho. House of Commons. Captain E. G. "Pretyman, Secretary of tho Board of Trade, in explaining the high price of meat, said it was duo to the largo requirements of the armies, ;t,n<! not to any deficiency in the sources of supply. Less meat was available for tho civilian population, and this'deficiency was sufficiently serious to cause tho increase in prices. LONDON, May 30. Tho legislation of the Dominions for regulating and controlling trade and commerce in war-time forms the basis of a. growing agitation. The enforcement of maximum prices is urged. It is imperative to deal with artificial food prices since the supply of food is ample, and its distribution is not difficult, but prices have been raised to suit the consumers' endurance, and it is felt that those limits have bec-n. exceeded.
