OTAGO WINTER SHOW
SUCCESS OF ASHBURTON EXHIBITORS. DUNEDIN, May 30. The Ofcago Winter "Show, opened today by the .lion. Dr. R. McNab, is right' up to tho high standard of previous years, the quality of the farm produce and stock being of special excellence, as was to be expected from the favourable season experienced in tho South. Canterbury exhibits wore very successful, and nearly all got into tho prize-lists. A. Rutherford; jun- (Brookdale), exj hibited three pens of merino .wethers, j and took the prizes without opposition. I Tho Canterbury Central Dairy Com- | pany was first in two out of three open classes for factory butter, and was third in the other. Levin (North Island), which had been second to the Central in two classes, won the third, and was also first in the class open to the North Is?and only. The Sefton factory's exhibits wore unplaced. Mrs F. G. Frampton, Wakanui. Ashburton, and Mrs F. Fell, Hinds, met with great success in the farmers' butter class other than for fancy, the former winning seven firsts and a. second, and the tatter one first and three seconds and a highly commended award. Mrs 11. Gason, Temuka, also gained a second and a third prize
Thoro was :i, fin« exhibit of cheese, the Island and Miitnura factories being the most successful exhibitors, and the quality of the produce was so uniform 1 that in no fewer than three cases were. there ties for first place. The fruit exhibits were exceptionally good. Mr E. Biakeway (Upper Riccarton) took most of the prizes in. pears, and was a keen competitor of the Trustees of the late W. J. Tonkin (Central Otago) in export apples, winning in one class and coming second in another Messrs T. S. Innes (Sheffield) and l! T. Wright (Annat) were successful with their exhibits .in tho potato classes, the former being first and second in Up-to-Dates, and the latter first and Mr Innes second in named varieties. The latter was also very highly commended for his collection/ Mr * Wright was second in the class for purple-top swedes, there being little to choose between the first and second exhibits, and apparently Mr Wright's had the advantage in weight. His exhibit of whitefleshed trunips lacked side 'as compared with those placed 1.
