CORPORAL C. C. BASSETT, V.C.
AUCKLAND, October 1.8. Corporal Cyril C. Bassett, New Zealand's latest Victoria Cross hero, is 23 years of age, and is a son of Mr and Mrs F. Bassett, of Burleigh Street, Mount Eden. He was a member of the Newmarket branch of the National Bank when the war broke out.
On one occasion young Bassett found two armed burglars attempting to open the bank safe. He pluckily tried to hold up the intruders, and called for help. Ho succeeded in preserving intact the bunk property, but the burglars escaped. His conduct nns f^ivsitly upjirec-iatc.-d by th;> bank officials.
