THE WESTERN THEATRE.

FIGHTING IN THE ARGONNE.

GERMAN, ATTACK PARTIALLY SUCCEEDS. PARIS, August 12. An official statement says:—"The bombardment in the Argonno redoubled in intensity, and the enemy largely used asphyxiating shells. A violent German attack followed at dawn. At least three German regiments advanced on our position between the Benarville Road and Vienno-le-Chateau and the Huoyette ravine. The Germans in the centre of this sector penetrated our position, but were driven out on a counterattack, retaining part of our first line of trenches. We captured a number of Wurtemburgers. " Further east, towards Fontaine-aux-Charmes, the enemy launched attacks, which were completely repulsed."
